This is our first project which links with a local school. At Thomas Tallis School in Kidbrooke a group of staff are being trained as beekeepers so that the hive being made by the Technology department can be populated with bees in July. From September the aim is to get a group of interested students and staff trained in beekeeping. Then the hive will be available as a resource in science and humanities and of course the honey and wax will be put to a range of uses. You will be able to follow the progress of this project right here...and of course help guide it or even become involved yourself.

Training day 1: The first training day included the sex life of bees, colony life, frame making and the first practical session where we all got our hands on the bees for the first time. As a special treat we got to re-home a swarm and we met the colony that will be the first Tallis bees who will move in later this term. Onwards and ever upwards with this project. Training day 2 included more sex life of bees, building a hive from flatpack, checking on the Tallis colony and having a look at the busy swarm we re-homed in Training day 1. Amazing the amount of work they have done in a week, puts us humans to shame. And as a special treat we see a new baby bee being born... Having completed the training the group are now ready to safely receive their first colony of bees at Thomas Tallis School. The swarm they rehomed just 2 weeks ago are moving in at SE3. This short clip shows how settled the bees are and how calmly they can be moved location...but remember move your bees 3 feet or 3 miles, anything in between and they cannot orientate themselves.
